2025 East Missouri District 4th quarter Conference

August 16th, 2025

The conference was held under the motto “Stay Strong Together!” in the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Columbia, MO. Fellow Optimists gathered to reaffirm their commitment to spreading optimism and invite friends to join the movement. After the Board of Directors’ Meeting and a welcome address from the Governor, Jean Naeger, we heard a presentation titled “Dream work makes the team work” by Governor Elect Jennifer Bagwell, followed by a relaxing Chair Yoga session led by Jennifer McQuay.

“Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” with OI Board Member Michael Boles sparked a lot of discussion around the usage of ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Grog, and other AI tools for marketing purposes, such as creating flyers for upcoming Club events, writing posts on social media platforms, and other relevant applications. The concern regarding the legal right to use somebody’s creative work was addressed, and as a result of the discussion, we concluded that AI is a tool that can be useful, but it will never replace the creative mind of a human being or an artist. It can mimic the style, but never create anything unique.

Just before the break for lunch, we all played the “Optimist Jeopardy” game. Peggy Scott and Marian Bozak challenged us with questions related to Optimism International and EMO District history, as well as tested our knowledge of the fellow optimists’ volunteer services.

During lunch, we heard the uplifting speech by Middle America Vice President Liz Christman, after which some of us attended the new officer training session led by Mary Hatfield.

The conference was concluded by the Award Banquet, where new EMO district officers were installed, Governor’s Choice Awards given, and Governor’s Ball in the style of 1980th.
